Please choose four books to read this summer. You may choose from any type of book for the remaining two books, including the following suggested genres. Books should be a minimum of 50 pages in length. Each student MUST select a biography as one of the four books.
- Historical Fiction
- Award Winners
Students should choose one book AND the biography to summarize by completing the two book report helpers included in the HW folder.
Websites for Book Lists:
Please submit 10 full pages of writing. Either type your entries or write in cursive. Your writing can consist of creative writing, journal writing, free writing, and even letters. Proofread each selection for spelling and punctuation. The goal of the assignment is to practice written expression skills over time, therefore it is not useful to complete all the writing in one week. We ask that these assignments are spread out over the summer, are dated, then signed by a parent after the student has checked for clarity, spelling and punctuation.
Math will be assigned individually by the student’s current math teacher. Please complete the math summer homework booklet.
The Internet is a good source for patents to find book lists to help in the selection of a read aloud book. Another good reference is The New York Times Parent’s Guide to the Best Books for Children, by Eden Ross Lipson. Local bookstores and libraries are also excellent resources for lists.
Once you have finished the two summaries and have read your four assigned books, you may write the titles of any additional books you have read on the Additional Summer Reading list provided. Books that have been started any time after the last homework turn-in day count as summer reading. In order to maintain and improve your reading and comprehension skills, we strongly recommend that you read each day of the summer vacation.
