For our 50th anniversary year, we are hosting Dr. Dan Domenech, author of ‘Personalizing 21st Century Education’, and grandfather to two students in our school, as our guest speaker. He was chosen as he has a message, based on his many years of experience as a leader of public schools, that the schools of the present and future should embody a model of personalized learning, modeled in Montessori schools.
Bio of Dr. Domenech:
Dr. Daniel A. Domenech, also known as Dan, Ph.D., serves as the Executive Director of the American Association of School Administrators. Dr. Domenech has more than 40 years of experience in public education. He served as senior vice president for national urban markets with McGraw-Hill Education and was responsible for building strong relationships with large school districts nationwide. He served as Superintendent of Fairfax County Public Schools, among other career positions.
The 7th and 8th grade students once again participated in the Montessori Model United Nations conference in New York City from March 8-11.This year the students represented the Kingdom of Sweden, and they began working on their various committee position papers in September.At the conference they worked with some of the 3,400 other Montessori students from around the world to write resolutions, and then on the final day they all voted on the resolutions at the United Nations General Assembly.The students worked hard, met people from around the world, and felt very proud of their great work!
The MMUN Mission
Our goal is to inspire youth. MMUN students formulate, present, debate, and revise positions on current issues that are affecting people of the world. By assuming the perspectives of a citizen of their selected countries, MMUN students not only develop an understanding of the needs and rights of others, but also learn the respect the cultures, the political views, and the belief system of others.
Taking on their ambassadorial roles in a Model UN simulation, students research the issue that their UN committees will address. Model UN participants learn how the international community acts on its concerns about topics including peace and security, human rights, the rights of the child, child labor, the environment, food and hunger, economic development and globalization. Model UN delegates also look closely at the needs, goals and foreign policies of the countries they will represent at the event. The insights they gain from their exploration of history, geography, culture, economics and science contribute to the authenticity of the simulation.
When they arrive at the MMUN Conference students transform themselves into UN Ambassadors and assume the rights and responsibilities of world leaders. Their imaginations propel them to collaboratively create resolutions to our world’s most pressing problems. MMUN encourages students to know that they can make a difference.
