  • Elem Ski 1 of 3

    January 20, 2017

As many of you know, our Lower Elementary and Upper Elementary students take three ski trips to Shawnee Mountain in Pennsylvania each year as part of the school curriculum. It's a great opportunity to learn a lifelong sport, practice independence and just have fun! This will be our school's 27th season at Shawnee. Students may choose to bring their own equipment or rent from Shawnee; instructions follow below. Dates for the 2017 ski trips are: January 20, January 27, February 3 (make-up date February 10) Please plan to arrive at school by 7:15 am on these days. Please read the following information thoroughly; it contains important details about this year's ski trips. There are two steps to complete the permission process: 1) Complete the online permission form. 2) Reserve your child's ski equipment online OR complete the attached liability agreement (two pages) if your child will be bringing their own equipment. All online forms must be submitted by Thursday, December 15, 2016. After submitting your online permission form. You will then be directed to Shawnee's equipment rental portal. (Group ID: 998dv17, Member Password: 998member). See below for step-by-step instructions for Shawnee's online rental system. You may contact your child's conference teacher with any questions. We look forward to another great year! ________________ What to Bring All students must have the following gear for all three of the ski trips. Please put your child's name inside all clothing. Healthful snack and brown bag lunch (see below) Warm winter jacket, snow pants and warm waterproof gloves Layered clothing - long underwear and turtlenecks Hat that covers ears (A ski helmet replaces a hat) Warm socks Ski goggles (optional) Ski Helmet (Bike Helmets are not an acceptable substitution for ski helmets. Shawnee will not allow the children to wear bike helmets.) Children may bring backpacks, but they will be left on the bus during ski time. Books and activities may be kept in the backpack for the bus trip. Electronic games, iPods, digital cameras, and cell phones are not permitted on the trip. If your child will be bringing his/her own ski equipment, they must be able to carry their own gear back and forth to the bus. Please practice this with your child so he/she feels comfortable carrying their skis. Boot handles and ski straps make it easier for the children to carry their equipment and are available at the local ski shops. Also, be sure that your child tries on his/her ski boots this year and they fit properly and be sure that it is properly labeled. For those bringing their own equipment, you will need to print and complete Shawnee's release form. A copy is attached to this email. (You only need to print and complete this if your child will be bringing his or her own ski equipment.) Ski Equipment Rental If your child will be renting equipment for the ski trips, there is a $100 fee for equipment rental, which covers all three trips. This fee will automatically be billed to your TADs account. Equipment needs to be reserved in advance via Shawnee’s online reservation system: (http://www.shawneemt.com/groups/liabilityrelease-quickrental.html) You will be directed to the equipment reservation page after completing your permission form. Once at the Shawnee reservation page, please follow the instructions below to reserve your equipment: First, you will be directed to the liability waiver. Click "I AGREE" On the next screen, enter your Group ID and Password, then click "Login": Group ID: 998dv17, Member Password: 998member Select "Ski" under rental equipment (students may NOT select a snowboard). A blank application will be displayed. Complete the form and then click "SAVE." Your information will then be displayed. You may either click "Edit" to make changes or click "Submit Member." If you have more than one child who will be skiing, you may then repeat the same process for each child before completing your registration. When you're finished, click "Finalize Registration." A confirmation page will be displayed. We suggest printing this for your records. Timing/Logistics On the scheduled trip day, all students should arrive at the school no later than 7:15 AM. Please be on time. The bus will leave the school at 7:30 AM sharp and return to the school between 5:15-5:30 PM. Snacks/Lunch Children should bring their own brown-bag lunch. Please pack a healthful, substantial lunch which must be 100% nut-free. Students should also bring a second bag with their own healthful, non-messy snack for the morning bus ride. Some suggestions include: cheese sticks, cream cheese bagels, fruit, small bags of pretzels. Remember, all snacks must be 100% nut free. We are asking parents to donate a group snack for the bus ride home. Your snack should be 100% nut free, healthful, non-messy, and serve 20-30 students. Suggestions include: cheese sticks, clementines, baked goods, small bags of pretzels, etc. There is a field on the permission form if you are interested in sending in a group snack. Inclement Weather As much as possible, the school will make a determination on whether the ski trip needs to be cancelled due to weather concerns the day before each trip. All families will be notified via email. In case a trip is cancelled due to inclement weather, there is a make up trip planned for Friday, February 10, 2017. Chaperones We need a few parents to help chaperone each ski trip and be responsible for a small group of students. Chaperones will help get students ready and are then free to ski or relax in the lodge. Chaperones do not ski with the children. Room Parents are organizing chaperones and will be contacting you soon with more information.
