The children in the Primary Rose room had some special visitors. Maxwell’s family, including Aunt Kweli Archie and Maxwell’s cousin, came in to do a fun art project with the class and to talk to the children about the celebrations of Kwanzaa and Mardi Gras.
Aunt Kweli talked about Kwanzaa, an African American holiday which celebrates family, community and culture. She explained the seven core principles of Kwanzaa: Unity, Self-Determination, Collective Work and Responsibility, Cooperative Economics, Purpose, Creativity, and Faith. They listened to traditional music and played instruments together. The family donated a book to the Rose Room library for the children to enjoy.
The students also learned about the celebration of Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Aunt Kweli read a book about the celebration to the children and they put on beads, and talked about the parades, elaborate floats, and the masks and costumes worn in this celebration of life. Each child decorated a mask or crown.
