Middle School students visited Marchese Family farm on May 1st as part of the Farm to School partnership. Building on what we had learned about biodiversity for Earth Week (did you know that, by weight, 96% of all mammals on earth are either humans or the animals humans raise to eat?), the students heard from Mr. Marchese how he encouraged biodiversity in both the range of crops he grows for sale through his CSA and through maintaining hedgerows. He talked them through the work he had to do to plan, prepare and plant his new, multi-fruit orchard and, in return, the students helped him get rid of some multi-flora rose! Building up both knowledge and useful skills.
