Gery Juleff, sustainability manager and Ecology Teacher
To celebrate Halloween in a suitably ‘environmentally friendly’ way, Mr. Juleff, helped Lower Elementary students make bird feeders out of unwanted pumpkins. Not only was this a fun activity, but it enabled Mr. Juleff to talk to the children about seeds, berries and fruits, the seasons, biodiversity, and decomposition, among other things! The students also had the opportunity to pick wildflower seeds from Sally’s Garden, and berries and nuts from the woods. This is one activity that parents can certainly do at home with their children and unused pumpkins!
Our goals are based on the Montessori philosophy. Dr. Montessori herself said, “There must be provision for the child to have contact with Nature, to understand and appreciate the order, the harmony and the beauty in Nature …. so the child may better understand and participate in the marvelous things which civilization creates .”
