In addition to their daily literacy curriculum, Upper Elementary students engage in a twice-weekly book club. Alongside independent reading time and our classroom library, book clubs seek to maintain and foster a critical love of reading – of reading for enjoyment – otherwise referred to as “aesthetic reading.” At the culmination of a book club cycle, students engage in a “book talk” of a new selection of high-interest novels across genres, to choose their next book club book. In book clubs, students practice having authentic discussions, engage in various fluency practices, and receive nightly homework that helps to build independence and time management skills.
