The children in the Primary Rose room had a special visitor for African-American History Month. Maxwell’s family, including Aunt Kweli Archie, came in to do a fun art project with the class and to read the book I’m Like You, You’re Like Me, by Cindy Gainer. The book is about understanding and appreciating each other and how we are all different and beautiful, but also very much alike. The family donated the book to the Rose Room library for the children to enjoy.

This colorful book teaches children about diversity in terms they can understand: hair that’s straight or curly, families with many people or few, bodies that are big or small. After the story the children made a self-portrait, using skin-toned paints and yarn for hair.
