The 7th and 8th grade students are once again participating in the Montessori Model United Nations conference in New York City from February 13-16. This year the students represented the Austria, and they began working on their various committee position papers in September. At the conference they will work with some of the 3,400 other Montessori students from around the world to write resolutions, and then on the final day they will vote on the resolutions at the United Nations General Assembly. The students worked hard, and are excited to met people from around the world!

The MMUN Mission
Our goal is to inspire youth. MMUN students formulate, present, debate, and revise positions on current issues that are affecting people of the world. By assuming the perspectives of a citizen of their selected countries, MMUN students not only develop an understanding of the needs and rights of others, but also learn the respect the cultures, the political views, and the belief system of others.

Taking on their ambassadorial roles in a Model UN simulation, students research the issue that their UN committees will address. Model UN participants learn how the international community acts on its concerns about topics including peace and security, human rights, the rights of the child, child labor, the environment, food and hunger, economic development and globalization. Model UN delegates also look closely at the needs, goals and foreign policies of the countries they will represent at the event. The insights they gain from their exploration of history, geography, culture, economics and science contribute to the authenticity of the simulation.

When they arrive at the MMUN Conference students transform themselves into UN Ambassadors and assume the rights and responsibilities of world leaders. Their imaginations propel them to collaboratively create resolutions to our world’s most pressing problems. MMUN encourages students to know that they can make a difference.

While the 7th and 8th graders are at the MMUN, the 6th grade students are working on a guided independent study on a topic of their choosing. Students submitted various choices of research subjects for approval. Over the course of the two days the students will write a summary of their research, write a personal reflection and present what they have learned to their classmates. The presentations will take the form of a video, poster/art display or a Prezi/PowerPoint. The goal is to introduce students to the process of academic research in a fun way, about a topic they find stimulating. In two years they will be leading the Princeton Montessori group at the MMUN conference!
