Raising your Awareness & Responsiveness

to Unconscious Bias in Education

Princeton Montessori School faculty and staff attended a workshop on their Inservice day, October 9th.  Being culturally competent in today’s schools requires a self-awareness and cultural understanding of conscious and unconscious biases that can affect our interactions with children, families, and each other. The presenter, Dr. Gay, engaged participants in an interactive workshop and brainstorming. They explored Diversity, Equity and Inclusion with the goal of deepening cultural competency, cultivating common frameworks, vision, and language. Dr. Gay also shared DEI best practice, with a particular emphasis on the implications for teaching and learning and fostering an inclusive school environment. The faculty deconstructed the word diversity, cultivating the business rationale and highlighting the ways in which all students benefit from cultural competency. They engaged in initial identity to learn more about implicit bias and blind spots; synthesize learnings; and talked about personal action plans.
Dr. Derrick Gay is an internationally recognized consultant to businesses, educational, arts, and philanthropic organizations around the world on issues of Diversity and Inclusion, and Global Citizenship. In this capacity, Dr. Gay partners with organizations, domestically and abroad, to promote empathy, cultivate cultural competency, and deepen inclusion.
