In recognition of Election Day, in Language Extensions, 5th grade students practiced close reading strategies using an informational text on voting rights. While they worked through comprehension responses, they were also invited to engage in a silent discussion around a single question written on the whiteboard. Silent conversations are a dialogic strategy that gives students an opportunity to “slow down” their thinking and focus on the viewpoints of others in a purposeful way.
