Geography
In Geography, the 3rd graders are studying the function and symbolism of nations. Using Pin Maps to solidify their geographical knowledge, they label all countries, their capitals, and flags, test their memory on geography facts by using control charts and collaborate with peers to analyze the similarities and differences in the symbols represented on the flags. Along with providing a geographical understanding, this material helps students build on their knowledge of the formation of a culture and the nuances of national identities. The geography unit on the country study also includes completing a Continent Game, a board game that requires the application of the students’ knowledge of cardinal directions and mapping skills, and research on a country of their choice.
