Learning About Our Rights and Responsibilities

5th GRADERS ENCOURAGE YOU TO VOTE!

After expressing a resounding interest in learning more about the presidential election, the 5th graders are engaging in an amended Social Studies curriculum that focuses on voting, the rights and responsibilities of citizens, the branches and roles of government, and current events. Together, they brainstormed ways that they, as young activists with meaningful voices, can engage in the upcoming election. They decided to start an initiative to “Get Out The Vote” in their own community at Princeton Montessori School. In addition to using visual reminders in the form of fliers, students have asked Mrs. Morrison to share a letter they wrote to the faculty and staff of the school.

DISCUSSION WITH A COUNCILMAN
They also had a unique opportunity to engage in a discussion with Councilman Hazim Yassin of Red Bank, NJ. They prepared questions and learned about the importance of local elections and government. It was a great learning experience.
