The Chicks Have Hatched!

By May 1, 2025Elementary

It has been an exciting month in Lower Elementary. On April 1st, fertilized eggs were picked up from Sourland Farms and began incubating in the classroom. Over the next 21 days, the students learned about chickens, their life cycle, and closely monitored the development of the eggs. They even had a special tool that allowed them to see the chicks developing inside the eggs.On April 21st, six chicks were born – four of them during the school day, which was an amazing experience for the students to witness. The students have enjoyed observing, touching, and holding them. The chicks are now big enough to move to a farm, but it’s been a memorable learning experience.  Many students are now interested in owning chickens themselves!Witnessing one of nature’s greatest miracles provides a rare opportunity to study the stages of embryonic growth during the 21 days of incubation and to relate the stages of a chick’s development to those of other embryos.
