Soil Power

By January 8, 2018Uncategorized

The Upper Elementary students discovered what it feels like to be in conversation with experts on the global stage.

The focus of our last School Spirit Day was on the soil, the carbon cycle, and the actions our school is taking to address climate change. The following weekend, a marvelous article appeared in the New York Times covering the same topics. Soil Power! The Dirty Way to a Green PlanetAfter reading the article the Upper Elementary students wrote letters to the contributing experts. They mailed the letters off in the hope that they would receive a  reply.

The response came back and it was amazing! Rattan Lal, author and Professor of Soil Science at The Ohio State University, wrote the students a letter and sent them each a blow-up globe depicting the world soil map. The globe shows the different soil types around the world. He also sent a copy of the book “The Soil Will Save Us”, by Kristin Ohlson.

Once the emotions of surprise and delight faded away, the students were left feeling exhilarated and empowered!!!
