“Children acquire knowledge through experience in the environment.” ~ Maria Montessori

Everyone is talking about the cicadas! Billions of cicadas from the Brood X group are emerging from their underground homes for the first time in 17 years. Princeton is a prime location for this emergence.

The Primary students have been learning all about the Brood X cicadas.  Many friends have brought in exoskeletons from their yards to show the class. They have read books to learn about their interesting life cycles, observed the adult cicada under a microscope, have enjoyed doing special Cicada work, including parts of the cicada cards and booklets. The materials and lessons have allowed the children to understand the interesting insects that they are seeing all around them at school and at home.

The children enjoy finding and showing cicadas to friends on the playground and have even brought in large collections from home to share!
