Princeton Common Ground (PCG) is proud to host Max Stossel, Head of Education at the Center for Humane Technology (CHT), a nonprofit founded by former tech insiders dedicated to realigning technology with humanity’s best interests. Max has spent the past several years speaking with 100,000+ students, parents, and educators around the world about social media and tech’s impact on our lives. He provides a much-needed perspective on the role of technology in our families, schools, and society.
Max will illustrate some of the specific ways technology is designed to be addictive and distracting, empowering you with recommendations on how to address some of the challenges you and your family are facing. This presentation concludes with an open space to discuss what’s working and not working in our households.
As featured in the Netflix documentary, The Social Dilemma, and highlighted in a recent NYT article, children’s screen time has reached unprecedented levels; now more than ever, we need to understand the impact of social media and technology on our children’s cognitive, social and emotional development. As the article emphasizes, “There will be a period of epic withdrawal,” warned one addiction specialist, once schools, activities and social life return to normal.”

More about Max Stossel
Max has spent years speaking with thousands of students, parents, and educators around the world about how smartphones and social media are impacting student and family life. He spent the beginning of his career with ad agencies like Anomaly and Vaynermedia, helping multinational brands thrive on social, and later worked for a social media platform where he designed some of the same systems to grab and hold human attention that he now criticizes. Along with his work at CHT, Max is an award-winning artist named by Forbes as one of the best storytellers of the year. He provides a unique and much-needed perspective on the role of technology in young people’s lives and in our society.
Princeton Common Ground is a volunteer-led consortium of the parent associations of 16 local independent schools, including Princeton Montessori School. Working collaboratively, the group presents several innovative speakers each year intended to inspire, invigorate and inform. The speakers host lectures, panel discussions, and interactive experiences designed to promote open discussion of relevant topics and foster community among participants.
