Designing and Creating a Tiny Home
In Design class, we have been exploring how natural and human landscapes, as well as resources, influence adaptation in home design. Last week, the students began a month-long project to design and create a Tiny Home inspired by ancient architecture.
We have taken four weeks to build up to this point:
Week One: We began with an overview of the history of architecture, exploring what we can learn from ancient structures. Each student researched a chosen ancient dwelling, then partnered with a classmate to compare and contrast the two homes—focusing on local climate, natural resources, and social norms—before presenting their findings to the class.
Week Two: We examined the concept of sustainability and the meaning of LEED certification. Students then played an interactive game to design a home that balanced resident happiness, environmental impact, and budget.
Week Three: Our focus shifted to the Tiny Home Movement. Students explored the personal motivations behind the trend and developed their skills in creating technical drawings for Tiny Home layouts.
Week Four: Students learned to translate their ideas into both computer-based and physical 3D models, equipping them with the tools to bring their Tiny Home designs to life.
